Project
DAPCA · A Digital Repository for Peripheral Cuneiform Archives from Late Bronze Age Western Asia
The cuneiform archives from the peripheral areas of Late Bronze Age Western Asia — the Middle Euphrates, the Middle Tigris, Egypt, the Southern Levant — constitute a rich documentary corpus that remains, at best, only partially known to the wider public. These materials offer valuable insight into the political, economic, and cultural dynamics of ancient Western Asia, yet their accessibility has often been limited by the technical complexity of cuneiform studies and by the dispersed nature of their publication. DAPCA (Digital Atlas of Peripheral Cuneiform Archives) seeks to address this gap through an infrastructure built around three complementary dimensions: retrieval, dissemination, and formal scholarly publication.
Search and retrieval
Most existing digital corpora of cuneiform documentation represent texts as linearly encoded, annotated documents, in the tradition of markup-based approaches to textual scholarship. DAPCA departs from this model: rather than encoding each tablet as a self-contained annotated document, it decomposes the textual hierarchy — tablet, line, word, sign — into a fully relational structure. This choice is not merely technical. It allows entities that other frameworks typically treat as annotative layers over the text — personal names, family relations, seal impressions and their attestations — to be modelled instead as first-class, interlinked records. An individual attested under different spellings across different tablets, a seal impression shared across several documents, a patronymic relation linking two occurrences: all of these become directly and jointly queryable, rather than requiring separate glossaries or indices reconstructed after the fact. The result is a retrieval system capable of supporting genuinely cross-cutting prosopographic, sigillographic, and archival queries, alongside conventional lexical and grammatical search.
Dissemination
DAPCA is designed to serve audiences well beyond academic Assyriology — enthusiasts of the ancient Near East, students, and researchers from adjacent disciplines who wish to engage with cuneiform sources without first mastering their philological apparatus. Interactive maps situate the corpus geographically and chronologically; complete translations and image galleries make the primary evidence directly accessible; and a search interface designed for intuitive, natural-language-like queries lowers the barrier that has traditionally separated cuneiform studies from a broader public. Dissemination, in this sense, is not a simplified by-product of the scholarly dataset but a first-order design goal, pursued alongside — and through the same underlying architecture as — scholarly research capabilities.
DAPCA as a digital scholarly edition
Beyond its function as a research tool and a public resource, DAPCA is conceived as a formal digital scholarly edition, assigned an ISBN and a DOI that establish it as a citable academic work in its own right — a status not usually claimed by comparable online corpora of cuneiform documentation. Unlike a printed edition, which fixes a snapshot of scholarly knowledge at a given moment, DAPCA implements a dynamic publication model: corrections, new interpretations, and additional material can be integrated continuously, while version control and systematic documentation of changes preserve the intellectual history of the corpus and the accountability of individual contributions. Because prosopographic, lexical, and bibliographic information is modelled relationally rather than encoded within individual documents, indices, glossaries, and onomastic and prosopographic registers can be generated automatically and kept synchronized with the current state of the corpus, without the manual, document-by-document maintenance that comparable apparatus typically requires elsewhere.

Juan Pablo Vita is Research Professor at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and is affiliated with the Institute of Languages and Cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East (ILC), Madrid. His research encompasses Northwest Semitic language and epigraphy, Akkadian language and epigraphy, the social and political history of Late Bronze Age Syria-Palestine, the history of the alphabet in the second millennium BC, and the ancient Near Eastern background of the Old Testament.
